Lunchtime Lecture – Peacocks, Plays and Pseudonyms

You may be familiar with the renowned local folklorist, Miss Mabel Peacock. Mabel was a nineteenth-twentieth century pioneer in documenting, preserving, and creating local Lincolnshire folklore material, alongside contemporary scientific and philosophical studies.

But did you know Mabel Peacock was also a playwright? There are six playscripts thought to have been written by Mabel in the Peacock family archive. Though one play stands out, attributed to a mysterious and unknown author: a ‘Lucian Wetherell’. Who is Lucian ‘Wetherell’? And why was ‘his’ play among Mabel’s manuscripts?

Walk with us through a compilation of our research into Miss Peacock herself, as well as the mysterious manuscripts, and the ‘Lucian Wetherell’ conundrum. Analyse evidence for and against our possible ‘Lucian’ pseudonym theory, and help us decrypt the mystery of ‘Peacock’s, Plays, and Pseudonyms’.
