17 March 2026 - 2pm-4pm via MS Teams

Childhood verbal abuse by adults affects 2 in 5 children (41%) yet often goes unseen and unaddressed.

This practical and thought-provoking webinar is presented by Words Matter – the world’s first charity dedicated solely to ending childhood verbal abuse by adults, will explore how everyday language influences children’s mental and physical health, relationships, and long-term wellbeing.

Rooted in evidence and real-life experience, the session will be presented by Dr Fiona Pienaar, child and adolescent mental health specialist, coach and former teacher with over 30 years’ experience. She is Senior Clinical Advisor at Mental Health Innovations (Shout 85258) and former Clinical Director at Place2Be.

Participants will be invited to complete a short pre- and post-session questionnaire to support Words Matter’s ongoing programme evaluation and improvement.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define childhood verbal abuse and distinguish it clearly from everyday communication challenges or moments of frustration.

  • Explain the lasting impact of language on children’s brain development, self-esteem, relationships, and long-term mental health.

  • Apply practical communication strategies, including simple language shifts that strengthen connection, confidence, and emotional security.

  • Understand the influential role that adults' words have on making children feel heard, valued, and safe.
